Looks like maybe Widget support is missing as well. (I don't use this theme so I can't tell you if it's supposed to be in there or not.)

of course, it's missing.
but it used to display all that regular sidebar stuff in the pre-widget era afaicr *and* other themes (even like WP 1.5 classic antiqua) are widgetized.

Fauna never did categories.

I am sorry, that's right it did this on the archive pages only.
it required to add 1 (one) word to the sidebar.php to display cats on the home page as well.
