  1. I'm sure this topic has been covered before, but I'm not too inclined to look through the 585 pages to find it!

How do blog posts get featured on the wordpress homepage? There's hundreds of thousands of posts everyday, is it done by recommendations?

The blog I need help with is mikeymiller.wordpress.com.

  2. Hi,

I've read through that before. What I was wondering, as there is over 600,000 posts per day (I think), how on earth are they selected? I'm guessing the blog would have to be fairly successful.

  3. Partly by hits, partly arbitrarily.

  4. Sounds like a fairly rare occurance then! Achieved it yourself?

  5. [Moderater note: This reply has a low correlation with reality.]

Without doubt the number of Page Views received within a certain timeframe is a selection factor. There are also algorithms that are used to select:
Top Blogs (The most popular WordPress.com blogs are ranked here according to a special formula.)
Top Posts (The most popular WordPress.com posts are ranked here according to a special formula.)
Growing Blogs (These WordPress.com blogs gained the most popularity recently.)
    Note the language filters. http://botd.wordpress.com/growing-blogs/

  6. That's what I thought. Seems a shame for the small niches/communities though. A blogger can simply post a pair of knockers, and put sex in the title - instant success.

That's right. It's always been that way ie. a huge popularity contest. Since the advent of social media (twitter) and social networking we are seeing lots of "popular content" rising to the top as the broadcast range has expanded so hugely. It's not difficult to note that among THE most popular youtubes for example.

  8. Nevermind. I personally would prefer to write what I write now, and have 20 viewers a day who actually appreciate the content and effort I put in, rather than have half a million viewers croning over a picture I copy and pasted from google.

  9. I feel the same way. Best wishes with your community building efforts.

  10. Thanks, I'm enjoying it. You too.

  11. Hi Mikey, I sift through a lot of posts each day and hand-pick the posts I like the best. Other WordPress.com staff members also pick posts, but I am the primary person behind Freshly Pressed.

Contrary to the previous comments left here on this thread, traffic -- or "hits" or "Page Views" as it's described here -- play no part in being picked for Freshly Pressed. It is all about the quality of the post itself.

  12. Thanks for the clarity - bookmarked! :)

  13. Ah, that's excellent.

    Thanks, joynmsu.

  14. I did not type Freshly Pressed in my comments above. I was not referring to Freshly Pressed. Slik had already posted the link for Five ways to be featured in Freshly Pressed so I just added other ways that blogs were featured.

I copied and pasted from the BOTD page:
Top Blogs (The most popular WordPress.com blogs are ranked here according to a special formula.)
Top Posts (The most popular WordPress.com posts are ranked here according to a special formula.)
Growing Blogs (These WordPress.com blogs gained the most popularity recently.) http://botd.wordpress.com/growing-blogs/

This is what I was pointing to in regard to Page Views received within a certain timeframe ->

    How BOTD works
We count up the visitors to all public blogs and posts in a rolling 24-hour period. No personally identifiable information is stored. Several times throughout the day, we summarize all of this data in different ways to produce lists of blogs and posts that might be interesting.

BOTD does not use numbers shown on the Blog Stats page of your Dashboard. Some page views are excluded for various reasons. We use proprietary formulae to calculate the popularity of a site. http://botd.wordpress.com/about/

  15. How do you figure out which posts to read?

  16. oh. I follow all the rules mentioned in that"freshly pressed..." post mentioned above. But sadly never got featured. I mean it would be helpful since homeschooling / unschooling and alternate schools are a "minor community" and that too without a solid network. Hope to feature someday on the freshly pressed so that more people get connected. Hope to see some more tips to get featured (from staff as well as forum members)

  17. @indiahomeschool, in June alone, there were 5,845,417 posts published on wordpress.COM. That is an average of 194,847 per day, or 8,119 per hour.

  18. What thesacredpath is trying to tell you, is that you're in with a chance!
