Font size keeps changing

  1. For the last few posts, when I save the draft, the font size enlarges. I am doing nothing different. I paste from Word (using the special Word icon), where the original text is in Arial 12. It has always automatically converted to Arial 10.

    When I go into the HTML, I see that the font has switched from "small" in older posts to "medium" now. When I replace all the mediums with smalls, the change doesn't always stick and reverts to medium after I click Update.

    It's very frustrating. Why has this started happening? My theme is Contempt.

    The blog I need help with is catsworking.wordpress.com.

  2. Hello there,
    As you aren't new and are well accustomed to using both editors to change font size I could be wrong, but I think I can safely surmise that Staff have been and are doing some backend work to improve our user blogging experience this week that's causing a bumpy ride for some bloggers. Your options are:
    (1) find something to do until later on;
    (2) use the Help link on the top right hand corner of your blog to report this to Staff and then find something to do until later on. :)

    But will you please be sure this setting is enabled? > Settings > Writing
    “ ___ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then scroll down and click “Save Changes.” Then edit your more recent post, open it in the editor, make one minor change such as adding a space and then deleting it, and then click “Update Post.” Check your blog and see if it is back to normal.

  3. timethief, I followed your instructions and found that "WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically" was NOT selected. So I selected it and saved the change.

    Nothing happened.

    After several most blog posts, I am still having the same problem. My font keeps being changed to "medium" in the HTML, and attempts to change it to "small" do no always save on the first attempt.

    What else can I do, beyond manually fixing every paragraph of every post FOREVER?

    Sorry, my frustration is showing.

  4. I would assume Word is putting in the "font" html tags, and just like is always the case with Microsoft, they are years behind. The HTML font tags were depreciated in HTML 4 and obsolete in HTML5 (wordpress is HTML 5).

    This,
    <font size="small">
    will no longer work. It is dead and gone.

    You have to do this
    <p style="font-size: small;">paragraph text here</p>

    Or this
    <span style="font-size: small;">text here</span>

    or wrap then entire post in a div if all the text is to be "small."
    <div style="font-size: small;">all your text and paragraphs here</div>

  5. @thesacredpath
    Thanks. :)

  6. I insert the text from a Word doc (not HTML) using the Word button in WordPress. I thought that was supposed to take care of the coding.

    My lines in HTML do look like the 3rd example thesacredpath gave, but every "small" says "medium" and I go in and manually replace it.

    I've been blogging with Word 2010 software for over a year and this has never happened until just in the past 2-3 weeks. I don't think the glitch is on my end.

  7. Word creates such convoluted, nasty code, that I'm surprised that wordpress does as good a job as it does in converting it.

    My suggestion would be to get Windows Live Writer and use that instead. It creates very compliant code, and you can publish your posts directly from it meaning no copy and paste needed. It is also very "Word" like.

  8. Thank you very much, thesacred path. I will certainly look into that!
