from external domain, wp-based blog to wordpress.com

  1. Hello!

I don't know if anyone can help me, but I have a problem. :(

I have a blog that is supported externally (eg. myblog.com) and based on the wordpress platform and I'd really like to move it to eg. myblog.wordpress.com. I did try to upload some XML file but I'm not sure if I did it right, because none of the posts from my blog is showing up on my wordpress.com blog.

Please help! Any help would be much appreciated. thank you so much!

Greetings! WordPress.com is a MU (multi-user) blogging platform. We run on a different code base than the blog version you can download from http://wordpress.org . You may want to take a few moments and read this description about the different versions of WordPress software posted in a pink "read me first" sticky at the head of this forum.

  3. no wonder! so this basically means i can't shift? :(

thanks a lot for your help though! its much appreciated :)

  4. taryn - dr mike might be able to help you with this when he's next on-line. Or maybe someone who has actually imported to wp.com.

I've only (recently) exported one way - from wp.com > hosted wp so I don't want to confuse you as you are doing it in the other direction. All my posts showed up, but I had to use the importer plugin from wp.org to complete the operation. So was a two-step process for me.Export from wp.com (xml file) and import to wp hosted.

I don't know if this is what you have to do if going the other way around.

  5. I have no experience whatsoever in importing and exporting between wordpress.com and wordpress.org. My experience has been limited to importing and exporting between wordpress.com blogs and between wordpress.com and another other wpMU platform only.

I agree with britgirl. You can wait for drmike to be online here again tomorrow or you can contact http://wordpress.org/support and get a definitive answer there.

  6. Folks, he's trying to import into wp.com. Not sure why we're sending him over to wp.org. :)

Just for reference, you mention that you did have an XML file from your old blog. Did you grab the plugin from this post? That will create the needed XML file that you can import here.

You mention that you can't see any of your posts. Are they on your Dashboard -> Manage -> Manage Posts at all? What did the importer say when you tried to import the old Posts from your other blog?

If you could give us some more detail of what and how you did and what you're actually looking at, we could try to help. :)

  7. *Aside*
@drmike - I thought this statement meant he or she had downloaded a wordpress.org blog

"I have a blog that is supported externally (eg. myblog.com) and based on the wordpress platform" ...

What did you take it to mean?

  8. You guys are geniuses, really! :)

I grabbed the plugin (someone did the XML file thing for me but it was obviously not the right one.)and installed everything, and all the posts are coming out fine and dandy.

Thank you so much everyone for helping this computer dinosaur out here! I really, really, really, really appreciate it. :)

  9. @ drmike - who was sending him to .org? I knew the issue was importing into wp.com. Hence my response.
