hello...
i have several pages on my blog; one of which is my resume. i don't need or want my sidebar of links to show up on these pages, and in the past, i don't believe they HAVE been showing up on the pages - but they are now.
can i get them NOT to show up on my pages? i don't see who to do that.

The only way I can see to get rid of the sidebar entirely is to get a new theme with no sidebar. If there isn't one, you can make one, but don't ask me how to do that, maybe get somone else to do that. They must have been showing up on the pages in the past, because I don't see why they wouldn't. Either way, I think it looks fine the way it is, but sorry I can't help much more than that.
Post script: I'd appreciated any feedback on my blog: www.noignorance.wordpress.com it's not quite perfect, but I'm updating more often and getting the hang of everything, and I'm thinking about creating sister blogs on humor and such. What do you think?

After looking at the markup of your current theme, unfortunately it is not possible to hide the sidebar on pages even with the CSS upgrade. To do that, you'd need to select a theme that adds different ids/classes to pages or use the Sandbox skin which does exactly that but you'd have to style your blog yourself, which would required you to have a fair CSS knowledge (and the CSS upgrade, of course).
Maybe other forum volunteers would know of a theme that does what you want without doing any of the above, so I'd advise you to wait for other replies.

well if anyone has ideas about a different theme that would not post the sidebar on the pages, i'd appreciate the info.
i am TECH-nically challenged, so doing anything on my own isn't really an option! LOL!
i just don't think it looks very professional to have the sidebar alongside my resume on the page, and i was pretty sure that it had NOT been that way before my last update about 6 months ago.
Kubrick doesn't display the sidebar on Pages and individual posts, and I believe there's a version of Sandbox that functions the same way.

@tamisanders: The only "normal" themes that don't display the sidebar on static pages are Blix and Iceburgg.

@hadashemesh: Static pages are created via Pages > Add New. But in the blog linked to your username you're using Contempt, not Iceburgg.
Right - raincoaster mentioned the Kubrick theme, which led me to Contempt. I changed it after I wrote, and now I'm not seeing the sidebar. Now, is there any way to add a column to these pages? Or do I need to create my own template, and how hard is that?
What do you mean "add a column?" You just chose this theme because it didn't display the sidebar, which is a column.

I'm looking for the easiest way to put up a "non-blog", a static web site so to speak, but I'd like a little more flexibility. While I don't want the sidebar to display, I'd still like to be able to display my content side-by-side. An article on the left, a different one to its right - that's what I meant by adding a column. You mention that you cannot create your own theme at Wordpress.com, but someone must create them, no? I see that there's also this Sandbox theme - that's modifiable, but I imagine not for newbies.
It's clear that I'm new to the site, and I'm also looking into the Wordpress.org option, which apparently is more flexible. But Wordpress.org requires you to acquire a domain name and hosting before you even start on the design, and I'm concerned that I might be overwhelmed by the technology and the time needed to master it.
To sum up, what do you recommend to someone who wants a static web site, hidden sidebar, and side-by side articles?
You cannot create your own theme on Wordpress.com. If you know CSS and purchase the CSS upgrade, you can edit it to change the look, but that doesn't change the functionality or number of columns.
The only theme here that has more than one column of content is DePoMasthead.
I would recommend you stay at Wordpress.com until you're more technically advanced. What you want is possible with an external WP.org site, but it's all up to you. If you don't know how to do it and can't hire someone ($65 per hour and up) to do it for you, it's obviously not an option.
You will have to compromise on the look and customization, but WP.com blogs are very well-built, have excellent SEO, and with using Pages instead of Posts, you can emulate a static website very well.
