Getting stqrted- pages etc.

  1. Hi everyone: I am lost using wordpress. I can find my dash board. But I cannot load pages. Eg. i want to create a gallery page for my photo portfolio. I would like a page to put in reviews of equipment and so on. I was able to load pictures but they are sittingin a library but when I look at the blog site, I cannot see the gallery with the photos. I am not understanding how is system works. I come from blogger and that is user friendly but does nothave the potential and capabilityWP has. hence Iam here. Following the written aadvice from zero to hero is not helping me because I guess I don't understand. Is there anyone I can talk to?

The blog I need help with is leicaliker.wordpress.com.

    In short:
    • To create a static page you go to Pages > Add New. To create a post you go to Posts > Add New.
    • To add a gallery to a static page or a post, you click the Add Media button of that page or post, upload the images from your computer, and click Insert Gallery.
    • "Reviews of equipment and so on" should probably be posts, not static pages.
    • To be able to gather these posts into one place, you need to add the same category to them ("Reviews" or whatever). What you'll do next depends on where you want that category to show up (header menu or sidebar) and what else you want together with it.

Start by exploring your dashboard as well as searching for the relevant Support docs:

Thanks rain - I keep forgetting that!

  5. Thank you Panaghlotisadam and raincoaster!
Now I have another couple of questions:
I am considering buying WordPress Premium Theme Linen. But I also like Theme Trust's Craft Theme (actually prefer it). But Theme Trust is a 3rd part theme. Is it easy to buy a theme and apply it here and not buy wordpress' Linen theme?
I'm sorry to sound ignorant, but in reality, I am clueless about these things. For instance, I bought into wordpress and paid $99 for the account and the domain registration. I am assuming that this means I have web hosting from wordpress. So when 3rd party Theme Trust asks if I need web hosting, can I say I already have web hosting? Also, when wordpress says I have a free domain name registration that comes with the account, does that mean I did not get the domain leicaliker registered in the first place?
Many thanks in advance for helping me out.
    Best,
    Elizabeth

  6. You cannot buy third party themes and apply them to WordPress.COM blogs. They are for WordPress.ORG blogs only.

You paid $99 for the Premium package. I'm not sure what's entailed, but for just domain mapping and name, that's only $17 a year. I think you have the Custom Design upgrade included with your package, but you still can't add external themes no matter what.

  7. Thank you raincoaster- I see now the difference between .com and .org. SO my questions is: if I stay with .com, then after a year, when I build a following and want to go commercial and get sponsors, advertising etc., can I move what I have achieved in .com easily to .org? Can I also keep the domain name since it will be my "moniker"? And one more thing- what is custom design upgrade? Does that mean I can get the Premium Theme "linen" as part of the the $99? Or do I have to buy it separately?
Thanks for your patience with me.

Yes see here > move to wordpress.org

Can I also keep the domain name since it will be my "moniker"?

As long as you pay to renew it the domain name is yours and it's movable. If you move the blog content into a WordPress.org install then you must update the nameservers.

And one more thing- what is custom design upgrade?

    custom design upgrade

Does that mean I can get the Premium Theme "linen" as part of the the $99? Or do I have to buy it separately?

What does it say on your dashboard > Store that the $99. bundle includes? http://en.support.wordpress.com/bundles/

  9. Hi timethief: Thanks for the quick response. I understand everything except the issue of custom design upgrade and what my bundle includes.
    1) On the bunde- I went to store and found this under My subscriptions:
"A free domain was included in the purchase of your WordPress.com Bundle. Get that domain for your site now!" - Do I need to register leicaliker as the free domain? Also, I have a Blogger blog that I want to be able to link to. Does this have any relation to the domain name?

    2) And-
    "WordPress Value Bundle
Includes a domain name of your choice or domain mapping for an existing domain, VideoPress, Custom Design, 5GB Space Upgrade, and No Ads."
From what I gather, custom design is simply the font variety. If I want Theme "Linen"- do I have to buy this extra? It's no problem- I just need to know.
    Many thanks for your help.

  10. Dear timethief:
Further to my question about my Blogger blog http://www.wanderinglulu.com - Under Store- there is a payment charge if I want to add a domain name I already own. Because I want to link people to my old site, do I have to buy the service to add the existing domain name? Or, can I just have a link on my site that says: go here to see my old site.
