Gravatar new feature eliminates listing by author

  1. Ok, at this blog http://insidevancouver.ca/ , I am 1 of several writers with editorial access to write just my own articles.

Before the gravatar hovercard feature was implemented recently in WordPress.com, one could click on any team member's name and get the full listing of all the articles we each wrote.

Now it doesn't work. I tried searching a team member with a full name and last name. Only a partial list came up. Yet I know the person has written a whole batch of articles.

Our articles have not been deleted. I doubt very much the intention is to hide our lists of articles from the reader since each writer has a specialty area that we each write on.

So how does a blog administrator in the future ensure the whole list of articles by a person with blog editorial access, gets listed in an archive list? I need to know for another blog I administer.

This is why I don't like the generic WordPress search box when searching within a content rich blog. And this blog has lots of useful content which require careful search strings or search statements.

The blog I need help with is thirdwavecyclingblog.wordpress.com.

  2. They just need to put the Author widget in the sidebar.

  3. At settings > discussion, you can turn off the hovercard feature and it should go back to the way it was before, but staff need to fix this. There should be an option or something on the authors widget that allows you to select whether to show the hover card or link to the author's posts in the blog.

I would contact staff directly on this as they need to fix it.

  4. @rain, the author widget no longer links to the author's posts. It links to the gravatar profile via the hovercard thing. You either have to turn hovercard off or live with it not linking to the author's posts.

  5. Thank you so much. I will let them know if they can't solve this problem soon.

  6. And I have already contacted WordPress support with this problem.

  7. Good. When they respond, it would be great if you could post what the outcome is here in this thread so we all know.

  8. tsp, thanks. What a demented idea, to change the functionality.

  9. Most certainly demented.

  10. Oh geez. I also sent them a note about the Gravatar widget, but on the Authors widget this is crucial.

  11. Yeah, this is a big oops. I suspect they simply didn't think about it.

  12. Well, hoping that their reply is that they'll reconfigure the widgets to accept the hovercard option or not, rather than saying your only option is to turn it on or off for the whole blog.

  13. Yeah, that would be bad if it was all or nothing. Too many of those going round as it is. We don't need another one.

  14. We know about this and we're trying to find the best option for solving it.

    Thanks for your patience.

  15. Thank you for updating us on this, markel.

  16. The blog manager for the organizational blog that I write for (and mentioned at start of this thread) plans to hold off.

He looks forward to hearing of the technical solution too. It will save him time from more painful workarounds!

  17. Ryan-Just found another wrinkle.

Twenty Ten displays Author information just under the post; the Gravatar there now shows the Hovercard as well.

  18. Twenty Ten displays Author information just under the post; the Gravatar there now shows the Hovercard as well.

    Noted and passed along.

  19. @maidiebike and everyone: I went to http://insidevancouver.ca and this is what happened:

I click on your name: takes me to your posts
I hover over your picture: Gravatar hovercard (is that what it's called?) appears
    - I click on your picture: takes me to your posts
    - I click on your name: takes me to your Gravatar profile

Anyone else noticing this on their blogs? The problem is solved or is WP.com still working on it?

  20. As far as the Authors and the Authors Grid widgets, it seems to be resolved. Yay!

  21. Yep - we pushed a change for this right before you mentioned it.

It should be taken care of now.

  22. Thanks for this fix and change!
