Guided transfer

  1. I would like to discuss over the phone a guided transfer for our site, godspace.wordpress.com. From the FAQ, it appears we would also need to pay the yearly site redirect fee to keep all our rankings and links active. Is this correct?

We plan to host with GoDaddy. Do I need to set up our new domain there ahead of time? If so, what is the process to give you permission to access it to change the name server and transfer our files?

Within our circles, godspace is very highly ranked and it's critical that we not lose any of our links or our current rankings through various services. If I understand correctly, leaving our original site with wp and using the re-direct to the new domain on GoDaddy, we will preserve all of this critical data. Is this correct.

Once the new website is set up on GoDaddy, I plan to do a site redesign including changing the theme and menu. Will I be able to change to non-wp.com themes and tweak the menu without causing issues with the redirects?

I assume the redirect is not just for the domain name, but also for each individual post and page, so that, as long as I don't change the post/page address, all the posts/pages will seamlessly redirect regardless of the modifications I make on the new website. Is this also correct?

If I have issues or questions during this transfer process, will I be able to contact somebody by phone?

    Thanks for you assistance,
Andy Wade - for Christine Sine

The blog I need help with is godspace.wordpress.com.

  2. Not really, you sent me back to the FAQ which doesn't answer the questions above.

Provided you do not change the permalink structure then there will be no issues with broken links.

    You're welcome.

  6. Howdy,

We don't offer support by phone.

The Guided Transfer team will transfer your WordPress.com site over to WordPress.org on one of the hosts listed at http://get.wp.com/hosting as close to possible. Since you don't have a domain through WordPress.com, yes, you would need to setup the domain name.

Once you're over on GoDaddy, you can change anything you'll like except for the permalink structure without impacting the Site Redirect. With the Site Redirect, all links to your current site (both http://godspace.wordpress.com and individual posts like http://godspace.wordpress.com/2013/10/11/example-post will redirect to the same address on your new domain-- godspace.wordpress.com to yournewdomain.com and godspace.wordpress.com/2013/10/11/example-post to yournewdomain.com/2013/10/11/example-post )

The Site Redirect is done in a search engine friendly way, which will allow them to realize the new site is the new canonical home of your content.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

    Cheers!

  7. Hello Guided Transfer Team-Are you back from your getaway and accepting new Guided Transfer applications??

  8. thanks for that helpful response - I'm ready to roll!

  9. Hi SocialEyes: Yes, the Guided Transfer is open again. You can purchase it at http://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/guided-transfer/

    Cheers!

  10. I've purchased the guided upgrade and sent the required information for the new site but when do I purchase the domain redirect? Does this happen when the upgrade is actually scheduled? Please advise.

  11. Hi Christine,

Could you reply to Michael's e-mail (indicating the date for your transfer). To avoid any crossed wires, it's best to ask the Guided Transfer team directly any questions now that you're scheduled and in the system.

    Cheers!

  12. Will do, thanks for the tip.
