Guided transfer question - before I do it, want to be sure..

I'm asking here because it tends to take a long time to email support and you all are lightning quick. :)

Briefly: I moved from Blogger last month, had my domain nameservers directed here so my blog is http://basiasbookshelf.com now (I'm on WordPress.com) and now my needs have exceeded WP.com and I'm going to have to move to a host and .org. I want to use the Guided Transfer option and just want to make sure I understand some stuff before I start the process (because I really screwed up my move from Blogger by not understanding basic stuff, d'oh!).

I spent ages getting my premium template tweaked with CSS the way I wanted it - when I have it transferred, I can get it moved the way it is, right?

Will my Dashboard and creating new posts look mostly the same? I can generally work things out but my contributor has some issues with figuring out this stuff and I'll need to warn her and walk her through things if there's going to be a big change.

Am I going to need to do any special uploading from now on beyond what I'm doing now? Like, FTP sorts of stuff, assuming I don't make changes to the template. Are plug-ins and widgets controlled that way?

I'm sorry if these are way too many questions that could be answered somewhere else - I've done a bunch of searches and looked in some different support pages and while there are some general answers to Guided Support, I can't find anything that answers to those specific questions and I'm nervous after my transfer debacle.

    Thank you so much!

The blog I need help with is basiasbookshelf.com.

I purchased a premium theme at WordPress.com. Will it be transferred?
Premium themes purchased at WordPress.com are only valid here at WordPress.com.

Note: Premium Themes are customized for WordPress.com usage only, and cannot be transferred to self-hosted WordPress.org sites. http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/premium-themes/

Yes but see here > http://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page

Yes you need to use an FTP client.

Thank you so much! :) Unfortunately, all of that was good news except one thing that moves me on to a whole new set of problems with my theme. Ugh. I have no idea how I'm going to start over with an entirely new theme to customize while I'm actually running the blog live.

If it's okay, I'm going to close this one as "resolved" and open a new question in Miscellaneous about suggestions for changing themes while going through Guided Transfer since that was only one of a few questions I had and I don't want to have it get lost in all the other things since now it's sort of a new issue.

Thank you again, you were really helpful!

  5. When you set up a WordPress.org install your use an FTP client to uplaod a suitable WordPress.org theme. There is a gallery of free themes found here > http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/ You're welcome.
