Hacked!

  1. Firstly, I am very disappointed with the lack of support. There are zero links to contact tech support, and while the community is friendly, I need someone from within the wordpress business to ask specific questions to.

That being said, I believe my blog has been hacked. All of my Sidebar links, etc. are not showing up although they are set up to display in the dashboard (which I was finally able to access after signing in from a different page within the wordpress website).

Any thoughts on how to remedy this problem, or do I have to delete everything and start from scratch?

The blog I need help with is thebuddharats.wordpress.com.

  2. If you are missing sidebar stuff you probably pasted in you content from Word or another word-processing program and you need to fix the broken html code that produces - maybe someone else will have the link on how to auto fix the bad code

The only “hacked” sites I have seen here have been people getting the password somehow to a site so you do want to be careful how you log in and use a tough password.

You should also check to make sure that someone has not added a new user to your site. Problems have also happened when there was more than one Admin. and an Admin left on less than graceful terms.

    Dashboard >> Users

Many times a users email is hacked or the password guessed and the email account is used to get access by requesting a password reset – you need to change your email password and make sure they nobody has been added to your email account.

You should also run a virus check on you PC to make sure your PC does not have a security issue that has compromised your email or WordPress.COM log-in information (also your bank etc. if you do online banking or retirement accounts)

There have also been a few Posts on “hacked” sites and it was because someone got the Post by Email address and using the Post by Email to send in new Posts, if you have Post by email disable the Post by Email and regenerate the address. Spammers have scripts the generate email addresses and they sometimes can get a valid address for a Post by Email address.

You could also use a secure log-in in case you are on an unsecured link: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

  3. Delete nothing as deletion can be irreversible in some cases. Which blog are you referring to? This one does not have any sidebar issues http://thebuddharats.wordpress.com/

This is a peer support forum where Volunteers and Staff work cooperatively to deliver WordPress.com support. Volunteers answer most questions and Staff monitor. When Volunteers cannot provide the required support we flag threads for Staff attention.

There is no phone support here. If you have purchased an upgrade then you can contact Staff directly using this link http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/ If you have not purchased an upgrade then simply post what you need help with into this forum thread.

  5. Thanks for the replies, everyone. I started going through my posts, and found some "cut and paste" code that looked suspicious. I deleted it and everything is back to normal.

  6. That's good news. You will want to enable this setting > Settings > Writing
    Formatting
_ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically
    Then click "save changes"

  7. More Better - Use the Past Text boxes in the second line of the editor (the ones with the funny "T"'s in them)

    You be welcome
