Have "news/feature" appear on home page?

  1. Hi, my blog: http://hireshi.wordpress.com/
Is like most blogs on wordpress, where your blog entries appear on your home page.

But can someone please explain how I make my homepage look like this: http://www.flyingpussyfoot.com/
Where there are news/ featured entries appearing in images in a slideshow kind of setup? (Flyingpussyfoot is a wordpress.COM website, just like mine).

Here are some .org websites, but with the same looking homepage set-ups i wish for my blog:

    http://neonskittles.com/
    http://www.shadonia.com/site/

And then I want my blog itself to only to appear in categories and not on my homepage, I only want news, slideshow featured entries, adds, etc to appear there and I have to go to my category page to find my blog.

Can someone please how I make my blog home page to look like one of those above?

Thanks a bunch! And sorry if my explanation is hard to understand ^^-

The blog I need help with is hireshi.wordpress.com.

  2. 1. The first blog you point to is NOT a free blog from and being free hosted by wordpress.com. The other two are also wordpress.ORG installs and the themes they use run on different software than ours. Ours themes are adapted so they can be run on this wordpress.com multi-user software.

    2. The Modularity Lite theme is the wordpress.com theme that has a front page slideshow. The demo site is here > http://theme.wordpress.com/ Just type into the title and you can demo any theme.

    3. There is only one page in any blog on which your latest posts appear and that the front page unless you choose to change it to another static page here > Settings > Reading

Understand that when we publish a post with Categories and/or Tags assigned to it the posts will automatically appear on categories and Tags pages assigned to it as well as in the Archives page. You cannot simply have posts appear on Categories and Tags pages and not appear on a published posts page as well. You must select a page for them to appear on.

    3. Page structured or post structured blog
A WordPress blog can either be structured as a page based website or its conventional post based structure can be retained. That’s why understanding the the differences between posts and pages and the impact on SEO of restructuring a blog is key to decision making when selecting a theme, and setting up your WordPress.com blog . > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/05/12/better-blogging-at-wordpress-com-pages-and-posts/

    4. Custom menus
A post structured blog has static page tabs appearing in the horizontal menu. By creating and using a custom menu you can have Category pages appear in that horizontal menu. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

  3. So to put it 'short' I can get it if I go premium and use premium themes / features?

  4. Short answer "No"

  5. No. There are no premium features you can purchase that will achieve what you want on a free blog being free hosted by wordpress.COM blog.

The only exceptions are VIP hosted blogs who qualify and pay for VIP support like Tech Crunch and CNN does. You are not in that league http://vip.wordpress.com/

To achieve what you want you can hire a web host and download a free install fro self hosting from wordpress.ORG and use FTP to upload a theme like the ones you point to. WordPress.com free hosted blogs do not have FTP access and we cannot upload any themes. The only ones we can use are here > Apperance > Themes

Please see here so you are clear on the differences between the two. WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
