Last week it had header/navigation tabs. Now it doesn't. I've added a widget in the side bar to compensate, but I'd sure like the tabs back.

Gave you created Custom Menus? Doing so will over-ride the display of static Pages in your horizontal menu. See here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
Since the template I use (Twenty Ten) had been displaying my pages on the navigation bar I've not tried the custom menus. I'll give it try.
Go to Appearance>Menus, select the blank option from the dropdowns in the Theme Locations module, click Save.
That did it! I bet I was playing around with the new custom menu last week and accidentally switched that setting. Thank you!

How simple was this solution? Thanks so much, all I needed was a quick search here and the exact problem was fixed.
Just wished I had done this first instead of resizing my header for an hour assuming that was the problem... Cheers
