Help! Site stats make no sense!

  1. Hi,
I've tried endlessly to understand how your site stats are tabulated, but I just can't figure it out. I get that visitors are people who have actually clicked on to your site and views are the number of entries they read when they're on your blog, but I feel like that doesn't tell the entire story. I've had days with 3 visitors and 306 views--am I seriously supposed to believe that 3 people visited the site and read 100 posts each? Also, everyone who follows my blog gets an e-mail every day when I post a new entry, right? I have 40-something followers. Doesn't that mean I should get a minimum of 40-something visitors every day, because they each count as a visitor? If not, why not?

I wish you guys could make this more clear. I have been on WordPress for over a year and still have no idea, really, how to tell how many people are actually reading my blog. It's a little frustrating.

    Thanks,

    jess

The blog I need help with is thumbstumbler.com.

Any visitor to your blog can click into multiple pages on the blog creating multiple views by a single viewer. Normally when you see what you describe it means you have had an image that has received lots of attention but I can't say that for sure.

Also, everyone who follows my blog gets an e-mail every day when I post a new entry, right? I have 40-something followers. Doesn't that mean I should get a minimum of 40-something visitors every day, because they each count as a visitor? If not, why not?

Likes and shares are not pages view stats. Likes and shares are misleading when you are talking about page view stats. Your followers and anyone with a WordPress.com blog who is logged into WordPress.com can "like" and "share" your posts in several locations such as in email and the Reader without ever clicking into your blog and creating a page view stat.

You can control the length of the entry sent out on your RSS feed here > Settings > Reading and choose the "summary" setting for your RSS feed or the "full text". If you set it to summary then visitors have to click into the blog to read the full post.

I tagged this thread for a examination of your stats by Staff so please subscribe to the thread so you will be notified when they reply.

You have a lot of images. If they page through each image, that's one view for each. For example, if you had a gallery of 50 images and I visited your gallery and viewed every image, that would be 1 visit and 51 views (1 for the gallery, 50 for the images).

Also, everyone who follows my blog gets an e-mail every day when I post a new entry, right? I have 40-something followers. Doesn't that mean I should get a minimum of 40-something visitors every day, because they each count as a visitor? If not, why not?

No, Followers are human. They get a notice that there's a new post, but they don't have to visit your blog. There's nothing forcing them to.
