    How do I get rid of the big empty 'widget' area if I don't want any widgets there?

    The blog I need help with is royalblueview.wordpress.com.

    In the theme you're using, you can do it only if you have the paid Custom Design upgrade.
    You can switch to a theme in which the sidebar is optional, or to a theme with footer widgets only - see here:
