homepage of blog not showing excerpt but whoel articles

  1. Hi all,

    I was wondering if anyone is using worpress templates successfully to display excerps instead of the whole post. I'm using BLIX theme, and in the template, it seems to say it is supposed to show the excerps. But in the pstsd the whole article shows up.

    I had the same problem with the connections theme.

    Is there a setting I shoudl be setting differently or is the templates OK?

    Thanks for any help as I don't want my hoempage to be a long huge sprawl, and also there being no need to click into my pages!

    Thanks!

  2. Are you self hosted or on wordpress.com?

    If you're self hosted you should really be asking at wp.org. That said, read this article by Lorelle.

    If you're on wp.com then the "excerpt" bit of the write post doesn't work. You'll have to use the "more" tag within the write post screen.

  3. Hi Collin,

    Thanks for your post. I checked out the link

    I installed WP on my webhost. So is this self hosted?

    I checked the template, and it says excerp, so I gather it should work - but it doesn't.

    When I put in the more function, it works.

    However, my concern is that if I put an adsense code on the template to show on the full page and not show on the excerps, then this may rely on the excerpts actually working, otherwise on the home page I'll have a large number of adsense blocks showing!!

  4. Hi,

    maybe I haven't got this correct. On the template I saw the words excerpt, but then later on the line the_content. My php skills are not that experienced. Do I need to change the code?

    I've marked teh place in the code. Thanks!

    <div class="entry">

    <h2>" title="Permalink"><?php the_title(); ?></h2>

    <?php ($post->post_excerpt != "")? the_excerpt() : the_content(); ?>

    ***************should I change the_content on this line to the_excerpt instead??****************

    <p class="info"><?php if ($post->post_excerpt != "") { ?>" class="more">Continue Reading<?php } ?>
    <?php comments_popup_link('Add comment', '1 comment', '% comments', 'commentlink', ''); ?>
    <em class="date"><?php the_time('F jS, Y') ?><!-- at <?php the_time('h:ia') ?>-->
    <!--<em class="author"><?php the_author(); ?>-->
    <?php edit_post_link('Edit','<span class="editlink">','</span>'); ?>

    </div>

  5. SeaBreeze, you need to be over at WordPress.org as we use different software here than you do and our answers wouldn't apply. We don't have access to the templates here either.

    Good luck,
    -drmike
