how can I import images into media library, instead of importing them as links?

  1. I'm trying to transfer a friend's self hosted wordpress blog to a new wordpress.com blog, to simplify for her. the import seems to work, but the images aren't imported as I expected. instead of being imported into the wordpress.com media library for the new blog, the images come over as linked images, that reside on the old site.

    typical example:
    http://laurelcaseytime.wordpress.com/2007/12/30/to-be-a-writer-look-like-a-writer/

I can delete the posts that didn't come across correctly and re-try the import. This was just a test of a couple dozen posts from an early year. However I don't see any checkbox to "Download and import file attachments" as described in these instructions:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/#importing-content-from-another-platform-or-wordpress-blog

pleae advise how I can import the images from the posts on the old site.

    thanks in advance

The blog I need help with is laurelcaseytime.wordpress.com.

  2. also fwiw.. I was using Chrome as my browser. the options didn't look any different in Firefox though.

  3. I'll tag this thread for Staff. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

  4. thank you for your help

  5. You're welcome.

  6. hmmm... would the version of the old (wordpress.org based) site matter in this case?

I noticed that the old site that I am trying to export is using WordPress 3.0.4. 3.8.2 seems to be the current version.

I have been reluctant to upgrade as in the past that has broken the theme being used. But if I need to upgrade to make the export work, that is worth the risk.

    thanks

  7. updating to WordPress 3.8.2 on the old site before exporting again did not change the result. Neither did using Firefox

The images still import as linked images that reside on the old server. I never saw an option to import file attachments. Only saw option to attribute various posts to an existing author.

    standing by for advice...

I will endeavor to be patient, as instructed.

  8. Okay and thanks for the additional courageous attempt.

Staff work through all threads tagged for their attention in chronological order in accord with datestamps and timestamps. It's in your best interest not to post to this thread gain as doing so will move the timestamp forward and it will take longer to get help.

  9. Could you please export the blog content from the self-hosted site again and import it into your WordPress.com site?

Before you do you might want to delete all of your content from your WordPress.com: http://en.support.wordpress.com/empty-site/

Please let us know if you need any further assistance!

  10. As requested, I tried again to import the posts. The result was the same. The posts import successfully, but the images are imported as links to the images on the old site. I need to shut down the old site, so this outcome is not what I'm hoping for.

Although I was prompted about choosing an author, there was no prompt to select an option to import the images, as the documentation suggests.

Please advise what next steps are.

  11. Could you please send the import file to us by e-mail? You can send it to this e-mail address.

    Thank you!

  12. I've just received your import file. Do you mind if I completely empty your laurelcaseytime.wordpress.com site and give the import a try?

    Looking forward to your reply.

  13. Yes, please empty the site (laurelcaseytime.wordpress.com) and re-try the import.

I only left the site contents in case there was any value for troubleshooting why the import of images didn't happen.

    Thanks for your help.

  14. The import is done. Let me know if you have any questions.

  15. Hmm, it imported all media https://laurelcaseytime.wordpress.com/wp-admin/upload.php but there are still a few images that refer to the old site. I'm going to check with a developer on how to pull those to your site. I'll contact you once it's done.

  16. I appreciate all your help with getting this import complete. Thanks.

  17. Sure thing, I'll keep you updated!

  18. Fantastic. A few strays is no problem. Thanks for helping me by doing the heavy lifting.

I don't actually understand why the import didn't work when I tried it as a user, but in a way, I don't really care, since it is done.

I appreciate all the help on this. Thank you very much.

  19. My pleasure and welcome on WordPress.com :)

Feel free to contact us if you have any more questions along the way.
