How can I restore deleted images?

  1. In September 2013 I did a bad mistake. I deleted all the photos from the mediathek of my blog barreoptuur.wordpress.com, not knowing they would vanish from the blog, now only showing the empty frames. I believed, the problem could be solved by uploading the images again to the mediathek. Actually this does not help. Is thereany way to get the images back?
    Thanks for your answer!
    Axel

The blog I need help with is barreoptuur.wordpress.com.

  2. Uploading them again to your Media Library is only half the solution, you then have to insert those images in their posts again.

    Let me explain:
When you upload an image, WordPress.com assigns an URL to it which has a date included in the image URL. So if you uploaded an image in August 2013, the image URL would have looked something like

    files.yoursite.wordpress.com/2013/08/yourimage.jpg

Delete it and upload it again in September, the image URL will have changed to

    files.yoursite.wordpress.com/2013/09/yourimage.jpg

It's not the same path, so you get a broken image.

  3. Thanks for your answer, Justjennifer!
So I think, I have to reinsert the images one by one, which is quite a lot of work! In order to avoid this mistake, it would be a good idea to post a warning in case somebody tries to delete his images!

  4. You're welcome and I'm sorry for no better news.

it would be a good idea to post a warning in case somebody tries to delete his images

The link to delete anything from the Media Library is "Delete Permanently". After clicking that link on a single image in Chrome I get a pop-up notice saying,
"You are about to permanently delete the selected item. Cancel to stop, OK to delete"

Ah-ha! This warning, however, DOES NOT APPEAR when I select multiple images for bulk deletion, so I will tag this for Staff attention so they are aware of this.

Unfortunately this won't help you specifically, but it may help someone else in the future from a similar fate.

  5. And thank you for bringing this up!

  6. Wow. I have answered so many of these threads, and I had no idea that there was a warning at any stage.

  7. Surprised me, I must say. And that was in Chrome. Haven't tried yet in anything else.

  8. Hey everyone,

Yeah, a warning should be in there somewhere. Let me get back to you guys on this. Thanks!

  9. Hey Axel!

Just learned from our developers that it is possible to have the deleted images restored, however, they warn that any content you made or uploaded between September 2013 and now will be lost in the process. Seeing the amount of posts you have made since then, I would discourage going through with it. Let me know what your thoughts are on this. Thanks!

  10. @druesome-that is good news and indeed somewhat of a surprise since this is not an option that we forum volunteers could mention or offer to users in the past.

If Alex does decide to go for a restore, wouldn't it be possible to first export the new posts that were created since the deletion date and then import them following the restore?

  11. D'oh!

    Axel, not Alex! (sorry!)

  12. @JenT -- Didn't think about that! But yes, that should work. Thanks for suggesting!

That is good news and indeed somewhat of a surprise since this is not an option that we forum volunteers could mention or offer to users in the past.

We don't offer this option outright unless we see a need for it. I do feel that Axel wasn't properly warned when he deleted his images by bulk and this would be a good way to make up for it. :) Still awaiting his reply though.

    Cheers!
