In setting up and getting carried away I inserted a link that now always opens up a new page every time I go to my wordpress site - I can remember where i added it but I need to take it out

There is no such universal setting on our blogs so I'm struggling to comprehend what you mean. There is such a setting we can select as an option when creating links on posts and pages. http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/
