How do I add a section for directory listings to a wordpress theme?
Also is it possible to add a section for banner ads to any wordpress theme? Or does it depend on the theme?

  2. A directory listing of WordPress themes? As in a listing of themes you've designed or want to link to? Or showing the actual directory of your theme?

The first would just require creating a page or post and putting that information in the content box. You can't do the latter. And you can't have ads.

    Hi there!

Thanks for your quick response. I actually meant when a company who finds my site whats to have their company listed on my site, I want them to be able to click on a directory listing section and fill in their info. so that their listing can be added.

Do you need specific themes to be able to have ads?

    Thanks!
    Aisha

  4. I want you to be clear about this because we are not allowed to initiate any advetrising on our free hosted WordPress.com blogs at all. There is only one advertising program called WordAds at WordPress.com. It’s for blogs on their own domains

    http://wordpress.com/apply-for-wordads

Aside from a blog being accepted into WordAds, no blogger initiated advertising, retailing or reselling the work or products created or services provided by anyone other than yourself is allowed on free hosted wordpress.com blogs. E-commerce transactions via shopping carts and the like cannot be conducted on free blogs from and being free hosted by wordpress.com

If you do require an ecommerce site, advertising and/or affiliate links you can hire a web host and get a free software install from http://wordpress.org Refer to > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Thanks timethief. What if I pay for a theme - then can I have advertising? I saw some themes which had template boxes for advertisements?

  6. No. There is no upgrade you can purchase form WordPress.com that changes any of the policies I linked to above. If you do require an ecommerce site, advertising and/or affiliate links you can hire a web host and get a free software install from http://wordpress.org Refer to > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    Hi Timethief,

Sorry I am a bit new to wordpress so thanks for your patience. So if I hire a webhost like Go Daddy for example will I not be able to use wordpress like I am doing now. Would I have to go to Go Daddy to make changes to my site? Will it completely change my site? I tried looking at the link but got a little confused as am not very tech savvy. Thanks again for explaining to this to me!

  8. If you hire a webhost and move your blog to their webspace, the WP.com terms no longer apply, and you deal with THEIR terms. Most web hosts allow ads.

WordPress.com is easier to use, more stable, and cheaper than web hosting, but there is no upgrade other than the $2000 a month VIP program that allows you to host ads.
