The display of my categories archives suddenly changed. They are showing the FULL posts instead of just an excerpt. I want to change it back to ONLY THE EXCERPT. Please advise how I can do this. My theme is Pilcrow.

On any theme with an active excerpt box below the editor box you can use this workaround to have full posts on the front page. You compose your whole post first and before you publish it you switch to the HTML (Text) editor, copy all the code, paste it into the Excerpt box below the posts editor, and publish the post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/excerpts/#creating-excerpts
If you do not see an excerpt box then go to screen options on the top right hand corner of your Admin page and include:
Post – Likes and Shares, Format*, Categories, Tags, Excerpt, Send Trackbacks, Discussion, Comments**, Slug, Author, Revisions, Writing Helper
P.S. On themes that do have an active excerpt function, the workaround works very well but you have to do it on every post you create.
Thanks Timethief for your responses. My main concern is with one particular category where I have 85+ posts and it's growing. I do author interviews & each is lengthy. I don't want readers to scroll continuously to get to the post they want to see. The summary display worked perfectly because it only showed the title name and a few lines. http://edenbaylee.wordpress.com/category/author-interviews/
In order for me to revert to that display for my existing posts, will I have to go into EACH post and add in the "split content" function or can I insert blanket piece of code somewhere to affect that entire category?

I hear you. My preference for Archives and Categories pages display is permalink titles only. I have blogged since 2005 and I cannot fathom: (1) why bloggers are demanding what amounts to triplicated redundancy!
(2) why Themes Staff would listen to a vocal minority and change this without notice to and consultation with the rest of us.

Timethief, really appreciate it. This seemed to change at the same time infinite scrolling came about - another feature that I do not like given I have video/images in nearly all my posts and this just slows down loading.

Luckily, I began inserting "the more tag" into my posts long ago. I'm sorry you didn't do that.
@edenbaylee One way to tackle it for the future is to add a "more" tag to the next oldest post when a new post goes up. This is especially easy if one is posting directly from the WordPress.com site (i.e. not so much if using an offline editor or one of the WP apps).

You can reduce the display of category/archives pages by simply not using either the current category or archives widgets or link them in a custom menu.
Instead create a special page using the "archives" shortcode http://en.support.wordpress.com/archives-shortcode/
and the apparently upcoming "display posts" shortcode (no Support doc yet) instead. Link those pages in your custom menu.
@JustJennifer, many thanks for your note. I went in and individually added the 'more tag' to 87 posts under the one category. It was a pain in the butt, however, it's done.
