Two things
1. I'm using HERO for my second blog but I can't change it to look anything like the picture. For example, how do I get 'call outs'
2. I've read your notes on the difference between .org and .com and I'm less informed than I was when I started - could you tell me in 10 english words what the difference is?

In order to use promotions callouts, you'll need to create some posts and then tag them with tags that you'll later choose in the Customizer (under Appearance > Themes > Customize). The article I referenced above provides more details about this and other customization options for Hero. And you can always contact us and ask questions -- we'll be glad to help! :)

There are few differences, that's why we try to list them all. Sorry it's confusing at first, but this question comes up a lot, so everyone needs some time to absorb this information in the beginning.
If you are not sure what the differences are, I recommend that you start with WordPress.com, without any upgrades necessarily, just use it as your training wheels. Post content, mess with options, ask questions, check out the support docs, ask more questions. Managing your own WordPress(.org) installation will be more technical, and here at WordPress.com we take care of upgrading to newest versions, backups, and many extra features for you, and we are happy to provide support.
OK. I've spent over 50 hours (no kidding) trying to get 3 callouts across the page in the hero format. I did the tags and all that stuff but the posts are still below one another
This is too hard. I only have a masters degree and an IQ of 132. What chance do I have?
Looks like you are missing the first step, as described in the theme documentation:
To get started, create a new page and assign it the Front Page template under Page Attributes. Then set that page to be your Static Front Page.
To get started, I created "Front Page" and "Posts" pages for you and set them up under Settings > Reading (this is where you can revert the change). After I did that, the callouts showed up just as in the demo.
You might also want to add custom navigation, you'll need a custom menu for that.

Maybe you can help me. I've posted elsewhere in regards to the Hero theme without receiving any help. I have figured how to get the callouts working, but am displaying my most recent callout not only in it's place as one of the smaller three images, but also as the main, full image on top, resulting in a double posting of sorts. A few questions. How do I display a different image as the main image? Can I maintain this larger image in a more permanent way, not to be pushed aside by more recent posts.
Also, is there a suggested size for the three smaller and 1 larger image for optimal display? As you will see, my images are being cropped for display purposes. Can I increase the number of callouts to show on my static homepage?

Okay, I'm still messing around and seem to have fixed my first issue of a posting displaying twice on my front page. Yippee!!!
But I'm still lost on the rest? Can you help?
I'm having problems with Hero and other themes (Triton Lite, and others I have tried so far) where none of them crop the images of that post, and so my main page only has text... (unlike in the theme preview, where every post has a smaller preview image)

I wish a "pro" could step in here, because otherwise anything I say could just confuse those who follow. It seems the image thing could possibly be taken care of by a trial and error uploading of pics with a resized canvas, and maybe a black background to match the black and red theme of Hero.
However, the featured image on top of the page does have different proportions than the three "callouts" below. I am a little confused on the difference between a slider and a callout, of which both are boasted by Hero.
I have tried to force the image I like best to show on top by making the post a sticky note, but that has no effect.
In settings/reading, I have increased the number of posts to include on my featured content (front page) without any effect.
I have posted elsewhere for help before and gotten NO response from our friendly and helpful WP employees...

The dimensions for the slider are 940 pixels x 350 pixels, so anything with that ratio will not be cropped. Similarly, the callout areas are 255 pixels by 155 pixels, so anything within that ratio will not be cropped.

Can I increase the number of callouts to show on my static homepage?
Not currently; three is the maximum. However, we've considered adding more callout areas in a future theme iteration. Thanks for the feedback!
