I have an email account registered (not through wordpress) and it won't work till I get the MX records directed to where my email account is held. Apparently wordpress have the records and I need help directing them

Your email service provider should give you the MX records, etc. and this is where you would enter that information:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/custom-dns/
Yes, they have given me MX records, so I'll enter them into the link you sent and see if that works. Thanks very much for your help
I was given two to update. One of them has worked (10mail1) but the other (prioity0smtp) has not. Any suggestions?
What are the exact records you entered?
Try making sure the SMTP one is formatted exactly like the first one you saved, including spacing and punctuation. Probably something like this is what you need as long as "SMTP.EUROPE.SECURESERVER.NET" is the correct server address for the MX record:
MX 0 SMTP.EUROPE.SECURESERVER.NET.
