I'm trying to create a custom menu for my site so that posts will go to designated pages. The tutorial says this will work if my theme supports custom menus. How do I find out if it does or doesn't?

All themes support custom menus. And all themes with a top nav menu (as in the theme you're using) support a custom top menu.
