How do I switch gallery out of carosel view

  1. Is it fixed yet? about time it should be!

  2. Having 'permalink' is not a solution.
Permalink doesn't mean anything to the average user. No one will not click on it!!

We have to move forwards but take Carousel out please!!

    Ken

  3. Yes , this is frustrating.

Add me to the people who want to turn carousel OFF and go back to linking directly to the large original image from gallery.

I did some more testing and sometimes you don't even see the Permalinks in Firefox 8. If you view the page in a browser window smaller than your screensize there is no permalink at all = no way to get the full unaltered image so all you get is a crappy lowrez version. You have to maximize the window for the link to show.

The entire thing seems buggy and are too complicated for people who just want to share a gallery with links to full unaltered images with the quality and resolution they were uploaded in.

  4. Come on word press, we love you. And love what you do. Sort this crappy Carousel thing out! For now just take it back to what it was. Leaving us to choose the resolution that we want to show off our stuff!

    Ken

  5. Yes, PLEASE WordPress listen to us! You have spoiled my website. Please Please listen!

Just repeating ourselves here ... but, setting a pilot addition as a locked default is folly at best.

  7. I think I understand that insurgentimprints!/$&!!?
"setting a pilot addition as a locked default is folly at best"
Translation is "Not a good idea".
We all know you are worth more than this wordpress!
    Give us back our choice!

I have spent the better part of my spare time for a week modifying my site so that my pictures load "properly" in carousel. It includes a lot of pictures of my paintings. I would absolutely prefer attachement page format to carousel. At least provide a choice!

If you have pictures that are not loading in carousel, look at the naming convention of the jpg - some characters/text seem to make the pictures not load properly. When I resent my pictures with short names-no special characters, they loaded (even though they had all loaded previously into posts/gallery).

Just adding my voice to the chorus here - please please please give us the choice of how we want our galleries displayed. We use the galleries at Graham's Port as a way to provide step by step details of a process for our readers, and finding you have buried all our hard work on descriptions, thrown away our reader's comments and completely derailed what we were trying to accomplish is really really disheartening.

If you want to innovate - fine - but please give your bloggers the CHOICE to accept the innovation or not - make things optional so we can decide what is the best vehicle for our content and our readers, and if necessary give us lead time to make changes to old content so it will work sensibly in the new formats.

  10. donnagould your work looks fabulous. But wouldn't it be nice if you could show more detail. Please wordpress give us back our choice to show images files how we want!
ie. let us switch off Carousel!

  11. Worpress, Speak to us!
I long to hear you tell us that you will give us choice...please again!
I have effectively lost all my detailed descriptions. Ordinary people don't know what Permanlink means (me for one)...nor will they bother to use it if they do as it is one step too far...and that is IF it is working.
I am really worried about this. It degrades how people view my work.

  12. The internet is all about moving forward, so I understand why WordPress have done this. It's innovate or die, but hey we have lost something here. User control! Keep Carousel, Some people will love it, but I'll say this yet again, give us back our choice!

WP tends not to speak much when you find their latest idea less than fantastic, brilliant, perfect and such (i.e. the comments you usually see in the official wp.com blog - because comments are moderated and negative ones have some difficulty showing up). Attitude seems to be: let them yelp, they'll get tired in the end.

  14. Hi Panos, I wondered what you would be thinking about it. It has totally spoiled all that work which, as you know only too well, I am not a natural at. When you choose a theme, you expect it to remain at least roughly the same. It took me a month of daily work to set it up. This is totally different. If they want to make it different why dont they just invent 20/11 or whatever. I really don't know what to do about it. It is lowest common denominator stuff (grand for people who just want to show their latest cycle trip) and it wrecks the otherwise good impression of my blog. And obviously lots of other people are similarly dismayed. There was a caroussel available anyway ...why force it on us?
Anyway, all the best Panos ...no doubt we will 'talk' again! Julia

  15. "negative ones have some difficulty showing up"

Interesting I have just left a short one refering people to this thread (on the New-Isn't-it -Wonderful announcement thread), which was 'awaiting the moderator!'

I forgot to track it tho.

  16. matcham1, for what it's worth I clicked around your site and loved how the carousel worked -- only one complaint: my monitor is fairly large and I wish more of your photos / scans were bigger so the work could really fill my screen. If I had to load a new page to view each item I probably would have looked at one or two, because I could just click through many of them I looked at every single item on a few pages, probably 60+ works.

In fact I'd love to buy one of these prints if you still have any available.

  17. How nice! Thanks...encouraging.
Reclining Cat would be £45 plus postage. It is an etching (one of my first actually) and sold like hot cakes! There are just a few left. Where do you live? Email me from my web-site and I will give you my email address if you are still interested. I guess it isn't a good thing to do it here.
One of the things I was thinking of doing was putting prices on my work...but now, unless people are really keen or techies, there is no way of adding such details with any hope that they will be read.
'Permalink' is an absolute turn off for 'ordinary' people. I was worried about clicking it myself...and very surprised to find myself back 'at home'!
Re the way it used to work, actually you could move on without going back to the main display of small images...it was something that could have been improved, because it was hard to see the little arrow. I think it still works in some cases. I was happy with that because people could see written details and I prefered a white background. Re-size...well frankly I am not very smart at technology!
    Cheers...Julia

  18. If you put prices in captions they'll show up in the carousel. :) Will get in touch off-line about the print.

  19. Matt,if you read through this thread and some of the other threads that were started about the Carousel feature, you might have noticed that some people are having trouble with it. Besides those having difficulty in getting the Carousel to load the images (spinner just keeps on spinning), captions being cut off abruptly after a certain number of characters, people have had their websites severely disrupted because they used the Gallery feature Attachment pages as a pictorial tutorial or have included detailed descriptions on the image Attachment page.

What are your thoughts on those concerns?

  20. Matt, I hope you realise that I wasn't saying how nice..etc meaning I was rolling over about the Carousel...I was just pleased that you seemed to like my work. I didn't even notice you were 'staff' until after I had posted.
I remain against it as previously expressed, and agree with everything justjennifer has said. By all means have the Carousel as an option, but let those who have a creative approach to the use of WordPress as more than just a blog have control back. Or have you all had a meeting and decided that you can't be bothered with people like us? I begin to wonder if it is policy? Is it?

  21. I'm soooo glad you came back matcham1. Restored my faith etc.
I noticed that Blogger have a flashy gallery viewer a bit like carousel. Mmmmmmm!
Give us an option WordPress you're still the best.

  22. @Julia: Matt isn't just staff, he's the founder of WP.
(Notice how well his response illustrates my previous remark?)

  23. If there's a bug, like the carousel breaking with certain image names, it's best to start a new thread with the specific issue and steps to reproduce it, this is a pretty good guide for reporting bugs:

    http://jetpack.me/2011/11/18/how-to-write-a-great-bug-report/

We don't want people just to turn it off if they find a bug, because then we'll never know about or fix them. :) It's no good having something buried in a thread like this that isn't easy for a developer to parse.

  24. @Matt: Right. Now how about those of us that say great new feature, just make it optional? Is it so difficult for you to understand that this would make everybody happy?

  25. If there was a change that would make everybody happy, I'd do it in a heartbeat, but there's no such thing. :)

Our goal is to replace attachment pages entirely -- they're confusing to readers, broken in several ways, SLOW, show images too small in most templates, and people usually drop off after one or two of them.

Since the launch of carousels people are looking at 12x more images than they used to, and it's still growing!

  26. Matt, I agree the attachment pages are borked, but couldn't there be a switch on the insert gallery page where the user could choose to turn it off and then the images when clicked just opened in a blank browser window? I think that would make everyone happy. You could even have the gallery default to the carousel and then if people did not want there images displayed that way, they could opt out.

  27. Well, actually that would not make everyone happy I guess. It would make more happy though.

I want to see people have more control over their content and how it is presented, and forcing the carousel on anyone use the gallery feature does not do that.

  28. It's not outside the realm of possibilities, but it would be after we get all the bugs in the current implementation licked and expand it to be launchable from slideshows and the new reader.

  29. Matt... sorry, but it really sounds as if you haven't been reading???? The change that would make everybody happy - not just with Carousel but lots else - is making these kinds of major universal formatting changes OPTIONAL - giving us the CHOICE between existing and new formats.

Looking at the blogs I work on I can see instances where Carousel will do fine (that's why I used slide shows!). But I also have a dozen galleries where the truncation of caption text and total loss (to the casual viewer) of the Descriptions is a huge set back and completely de-railed the whole point of the gallery which was to create an illustrated guide to how we perform a complex winemaking or viticultural task.

I now have to go back into my postings and re-write the text to instruct people to click on the "permalink" button to view full texts for photos. Huge annoying bummer. I don't want to have to constantly repair back content to circumvent or explain to my readers your abrupt massive changes to format.

Please, read again what JustJennifer said, after your comment about "if you put prices in captions... " and answer her, and all of us! The issues are not just functional bugs, the issues are First, a loss of control over our content and how it is displayed for a substantial back library of content which our users still access and Second, limiting our ability in future to display photos with correlated substantive text in a sensible, focussed arrangement.

  30. The fix to the problem you described is not truncating captions and figuring out a good way to include descriptions, not throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Fixing the core issues, rather than ignoring it by allowing the loudest people complaining to turn it off, will benefit everybody.

This may sound uninteresting because the issue in front of you seems like the most important in the world, and would be SO EASY to fix if we just added a toggle or switch, but that path ends in ruin. Either we do that for everything and WP is just a thousand options that no one remembers or cares about anymore, or there's some shortcode switch or hidden feature for you to deactivate the carousel and because it's not widely used it'll probably break in a future release, or it makes the underlying code more complex in a way that slows down future development, or you end up with so many non-default hoops you have to jump through to get your blog the way you want that posting becomes slower and slower until one day you just give it up or switch to something else. I'm exaggerating for effect, but I've personally witnessed the above happen to many, many software projects.

The feedback in this thread has already been heard and considered, if you'd like to affect change the best thing to do is to start a new thread with specific, easy-to-recreate steps or links to galleries and use-cases with problems so developers can share the links, brainstorm solutions, and test them on your blog. Feel free to tag it "formatt" so I'll see it like this one.
