I feel more comfortable typing a blog in another place like a word document or pages document and work on it when I have time. Once complete, I would like to know the best way to copy it in my blog on wordpress.

Go to Settings > Writing and select “ ___ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then scroll down and click “Save Changes.”
Microsoft WORD is not web compliant. http://en.support.wordpress.com/microsoft-word/Therefore if you copy and paste from it you are copying and pasting some junk code. If you decide that you still want to use Word then you should use the Word cleanup feature to remove all extraneous tags from your text. http://en.support.wordpress.com/microsoft-word/#using-word-cleanly
You can use an offline blog client such as Windows Live Writer (Windows) or Ecto (Mac) and then everything is saved on your computer and when you are done with the post, you actually publish it directly from the blog client software. Thank you again for your help. I am still reading about which will be the best approach for me. I looked into Ecto and did the setting> writing and select etc. Thank you for the options.

If you like Word best, you will like Windows Live Writer. It's very much like Word, but designed for blogging, so you can add pictures, categories, etc. And it's free.
