How many pages are allowed

  1. How many pages are allowed to be created
and are new pages added appearing at the top
    or scrolling downwards?

The blog I need help with is tigress00eyes.wordpress.com.

  2. Are you asking about pages or posts? Your pages are "Home" and "About".
You can have unlimited posts and your most recent one appears at the top.
Is that what you were asking?

  3. Hello Mike Dariano,
thanks for relying to my query!
To be more precise what i want to know is:
1- Whether it is possible to construct a Blog with PAGES only
    no posts, and
2- If it is possible and allowed
    a) Is there a limit regarding the number of Pages
    b) In what order will they appear.

I am considering a Blog that latests entries are added
below the previous so that the story is presented
    in order.

    Thanks
    Tigress

  4. 1) yes

2A) I suspect there is some sort of limit based on some very large integer number used to index the database - but the public position is no real limit - I doubt you could type that fast the rest of your life - if you need a number is 1,000,000 OK?

2B) you can pick the order of the pages and make a page as a child of another page (sub page)

  5. Actually, the limit of pages that can be included in the page widget is about 80.

  6. Opps - sorry about the bad number

Morning @RC - That would seem a small number of Pages to me -

How does the limit work if you have Parent and Child pages? Could you put 80 Parents in the widget then have a number of Child Pages from each Parent?

    thanks

  7. Raincoaster is very close. The maximum for the custom menu is 88 pages or sub-pages.

  8. P.S. Notice I said "for the custom menu". That's the total the pages or sub-pages that can be added to and displayed in a custom menu.

  9. It isn't so much a physical number as it is that with thousands of pages - or even hundreds, or even 50, navigation becomes an issue and visitors will not wade through to find what they are looking for. Organizing large numbers of pages takes a lot of thought and is always a challenge.

With posts, you can categorize them to organize them, but with pages you cannot categorize.

  10. @thesacredpath
I do agree with you, Visitors aren't going to wade through a huge number of tags to find what they want. they skim read posts as it is and don't have patience for that.

Actually Staff did weigh in and provide the number for custom menus that I referred to above, but I'm logged in under this account and don't have the link to the thread this came up in right now.

  11. while not directly related I also remember some discussions in the .ORG forum on Permalinks when they were made to look like a page - i.e. take out the date and use only a title - can't remember the number but it did not take a big number to kill the database performance - yes for some readers - we can't change Permalinks here - the performance of what looked like pages was limited -

  12. @tigress00eyes

I am considering a Blog that latest entries are added
below the previous so that the story is presented
    in order.

In that case consider making a static front page with an archive / index of your posts (posts can go into hundreds, thousands, more, more, more) rather than making pages.

Pages are cumbersome for readers to navigate when you have more than, say 6 to 10 visible in your top navigation menu. And drop-down menus don't really show what is available at first glance. Fly-out menu items are difficult for readers to even locate, much less click on to view…

Better to make an index. Many readers, especially regular readers, visit your site to see the newest latest post / article / chapter you have written: why not make it very easy for them to find it?

I remember that thread but cannot find it, the one about the limit to how many pages one can have on wp.com. There was a staff response along the lines that theoretically there is no limit but in the real world it comes down to some specific number: whether it was 80 or 88 or some other number. I'd be interested if you find that topic!
