How to cancel my wordpress.com account and start using wordpress.org?

  • Hey all,

I recently tried out the free trial for the website that I’m starting up called http://www.ocularmagazine.com however I’ve since downloaded the wordpress.org cms and registered my domain name with bluehost.com. I think this has caused a bit of a problem as I am unable to access the stand-alone wordpress interface for my website but instead am redirected to the wordpress.com site.

I’ve read the forums and tried a few different things including changing the name servers to bluehosts and cancelling my trial/domain name. However wordpress doesn’t let me do this as it recommends changing the name servers instead.

At this stage I really just want to delete my wordpress.com site (as there is nothing on it) and start using the wordpress cms so I can install themes etc.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

  • Hi!

So, it looks like you registered ocularmagazine.com with the Premium bundle, but it sounds like you want to use this domain for your self-hosted site instead.

The best option would actually not be to cancel the domain from WordPress.com. Instead, I would recommend changing the name servers as you mention (looks like you have). The reason being that when a domain is cancelled, it is sent back to the registrar. It can take 3-4 weeks before you can use it again. During that time, your site would be down.

    Here’s what I’m proposing:

    • I cancel the Premium bundle from your account and leave the domain intact
    • Rather than paying $99 for the Premium bundle, I’ll send a payment request for $26, which is the cost of the domain
    • We leave the name servers pointed to Bluehost so it loads your self-hosted site as it is now.
    • After 60 days, you can transfer the domain to Bluehost following the instructions here:

      http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/transfer-domain-registration/

Following this method, we won’t have any downtime. Can you let me know how that sounds to you?

  • Hey Jeremy,

Yeah I think that that is the case.
This sounds like a good plan, however I’m not really keen to pay the $26 domain registration fee when i’ve already paid BlueHost to register the domain.

Is there anyway I can cancel the premium bundle and wait the 60 days before transferring the domain name WITHOUT paying the $26 registration fee?

Thanks for getting back to me,

    Tim

  • Hey Tim,

In order for the domain to work, you’ll need to pay the $26 domain registration fee. Just to clarify, you paid Bluehost for hosting, not for the domain registration. Hosting and registration are actually two separate items. Hosting is payment for the storage of your blog information. Registration is the fee for actually owning the domain.

When you transfer your domain to Bluehost, you won’t be losing out on the $26. That registration fee ensures that you own the domain through 8/18/15. This will continue to be the case when you transfer the domain. So, your $26 payment will still ensure that you own the domain through next year. Does that make sense?

  • Hey Jeremy,

    That makes perfect sense.

Sorry I’m new to this and still in the learning phase.

Anyway I think the $26 registration fee sounds fine so you can go ahead and charge my account that much and remove the professional bundle.

Just to clarify, if I do this can I delete my blog from my wordpress.com site and use the wordpress.org software to edit my site? This is ultimately what I’m trying to do.

    Thanks,

    Tim

  • Hey Tim!

I went ahead and sent a manual payment request to your email address. You should be able to complete the payment there with a credit card. Please let me know once you’ve made the payment!

As far as using your domain with your self-hosted site, the domain is already pointed to Bluehost and it looks like you have WordPress.org already installed. So, you should be able to login to your self-hosted site here:

    http://ocularmagazine.com/wp-admin

Can you give that a try? Please note, that will be completely different than your WordPress.com login. You should have a separate login you created for your self-hosted site.

  • Hey Tim!

Just letting you know I received your payment. Please let me know if you have any additional questions regarding using your site.

  • Hey Jeremy,

I gave it a try and it worked fine!

I’ve paid for the domain registration and looking forward to getting started on my site.

    Thanks for all your help!

    Tim

  • Not a problem Tim! Glad we got this worked out.
