How to click on imagemap to open text in sidebar

  1. I am trying to migrate our nonprofit's website to a WordPress site. I inherited the old site, and it is functioning until I can set the new one up. I have changed much of it and learning as I go. I want to move the page over and have people click on the city and open the summary text in a right sidebar...just like it does on the original site. It has a lot of php coding , and I am having a hard time figuring out how to do it. The page is http://www.healthyhabitats.org/projects2010.php. Can I even do this in WordPress? I want to take out the yearly banners and create a custom menu in the left sidebar with the years. I want to use this to keep a running list of the schools' yearly projects like an archive. I was told it would be better for performance to make a separate map page for each year rather than one. I think I can handle the menu, but the imagemap has me stumped. Any help would be appreciated.

The blog I need help with is healthyhabitats.org.
