This page > Settings > Discussion is where you set up defaults for comments.

We can also override the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any post or page. http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/
If you don't create posts then there will be no Archives created. If you don't want any widget display at all go here > Apearance > Widgets and place am empty twxt widget in the sidebar. Click to open, click "save" and "close" inside the widget and the deafult sidebar disaplay will be gone.
