how to create a website with WordPress

  1. I just created my WordPress account, but my dashboard doesn't show any of the controls I need to create my webpage? How do I get to a dashboard page that will allow me to set up my website?

  2. What is the URL of your blog here?

  3. When you login what you get is your dashboard. Read the support page on publishing, posts, pages etc; you need to read a lot. Try adding a new post [posts>add new] to begin.

The look will be that of a blog but you can make it look like a static website such as my JNU Holi blog http://jnuholi.wordpress.com using only the pages.

  4. I don't really know the URL. I just linked my account to my domain at http://www.greenrealmfutures.org, but I don't think that's going to change anything.

Thanks for letting me know about the learning curve, though. I was under the impression this would only take a few minutes. I just left a demonstration for WordPress where I was told that there is some software that takes five minutes to download, but I can't seem to find it.

  5. Lylealmond,

You are in the wrong forum. This is for wordpres.com and not wordpress.org; you belong to the latter. Read the difference here: http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/please-read-me-first-before-posting?replies=1

Unless you have some experience with free blogging here, a self hosted blog will be difficult to run. You can do some experimentation with free blogging here and/or you can install wordpress on your domain using the one-click installer [contact your web host; it's Godaddy probably]. You are a beginner. Read and learn.

  6. Lylealmond, URL Or URI is your web address which now you have linked to your name.

  7. BTW, Lyle, if you have not yet bought web hosting and only have bought a domain name then the best thing to do will be to get a free blog on wordpress.com and buy the domain mapping option like me in 10 dollars to direct greenrealmfuture to this address.

Later when you know the ropes, you can shift to self hosted wordpress. This will be the ideal thing to do. Do not buy web hosting if you do not know the blogging basics. The learning curve is from free blogging on wordpress.com to self-hosted blogging [the five-minute software install thing].
