How to custom crop thumbnail in image gallery to open uncropped full image

  1. Please help, I've searched everywhere, I want a custom cropped thumbnail in my image gallery to open uncropped full image in wordpress.com twenty eleven theme.

  2. Hi Time Thief,

First of all I want to say thank you for even answering. I already see that in my limited time in WP you have done a huge service to folks trying to figure WP and blogging out. I've checked out your blog and gotten some great information, thanks!

Thanks for the reply and the link, but I've already looked at that many times, and unfortunately those instructions don't help with what I'm trying to do, or I'm simply missing something.

What I am trying to do is get an image that I have already custom cropped in photoshop at 300x300 for the thumbnail (I see WP crops further to 150x150, which is fine) to open a different (full-size) image at 800x800 for the large size. Instead of a mini replica of my large file, I want a more tightly cropped custom image for the thumbnail.

I've figured out how to crop my image smaller in the WP interface when editing in the post gallery, but that only gives me a larger version of the image cropped.

I've searched all over to find the solution to this. One person suggested to a long ago post to create 2 images, load them up and then in the box where you can edit your image, put the name of the larger image into the "Link URL" box. I tried this and clicked "Save all changes", but when I went back to "Show" again into the thumbnail I was trying to link to the larger image, it automatically reverted to the default link for the thumbnail.

Help! I don't want a custom cropped thumbnail to link to every single one of my larger images, but I would like to change a few of the thumbnail versions that WP makes as a default to something of my own custom cropping. I have no issues creating multiple files in photoshop to the right sizes, but really can not figure out how my own custom cropped thumbnail image can open an uncropped larger file of that image. I am using the twenty eleven theme.

Thank you for any further help you can give. Cheers!

You can't use the Gallery feature to do what you want. As you've already noticed, the Gallery feature will ignore anything you put in the Link URL field.

Follow the instructions above but use an HTML table instead. See more here:
