How to edit .css and .php

  • Hi All,

This is my first post to the forum, and I’m very new to wordpress, so please bear with me.

All I wanted to do was : show my blog as summary – i.e. instead of showing the whole post, I wanted something like 15-20 lines, followed by a ‘read more’ link.

I got the answer on the forum itself – it said I need to edit my theme’s index.php. And then I felt that I’m missing something very basic.

What I did was – create an account on wordpress.com, created a blog, and started blogging.

Now, I’m reading solutions to various problems, and it says that you’ll have to edit this file and that file and so on.

Now, the problem is, all that stuff is available with wordpress.org and I’m working with wordpress.com. So, is it possible to do this ‘read more’ thing with wordpress.com?

    Please reply.

    Thanks in advance.

  • The stuff you are reading on the internet is virtually always for self-hosted wordpress sites and will not apply to wordpress.COM sites. Due to this being a multi-user platform, there are limitations and restrictions for security reasons.

We cannot edit the underlying theme files here at wordpress.COM. This is a multi-user platform which means we all share the same underlying theme and wordpress files. Any change by one person would change it for everyone using that theme.

You can edit the CSS (change the look of a theme here) by purchasing the Custom Design Upgrade.

  • To add the read more, just do it on a post by post basis. It is built into the editor and the system here.
