I'm looking to clean up odd image sizes on older posts from when I had a different theme and also looking to clean up tags as well. Each time I've done this I've noticed in Google Reader that those edited posts show up as new. Is there a way to turn off RSS temporarily while I edit, or some other solution I've yet to think of?

No there isn't. You can reduce the number of posts appearing in the RSS Feed here . Settings > Reading to 1. You can chnage the blog settings to private and do your clean up and then change the privacy setting back to "public". http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
