How to fix my home page?

  1. The format of my home page changed without my input after I upgraded my domain last April. Just recently I noticed another change I did not make. No new content has been added to my website since October 2012. It has been an archive ever since.
Here's how my home page looked last April (thanks to the Wayback Machine:

I looked at both and I'm not clear on what your issue is.

Will you please clearly state what you want to change?

  5. Note the differences in the banner in the two home pages. Note that the search box on the top of the right hand column is gone in the home page as is currently found at medicalconsumers. org
I want my home page, which has been an archive since October, to look as it did last April: http://web.archive.org/web/20130407201416/http://medicalconsumers.org/

  7. When you wrote "install it again," I gather you are referring solely to the placement of the banner. Please look again at the difference between the April version of the home page of my website and the current version. The problems are more than the banner placement and the missing search box on the upper right. My question is: how can I get my home page back to what it looked like in April. I did nothing to make any of these changes. Thank you.

  8. Also, I want to know how the search box disappeared. Unlike the changes that occurred after April (which coincided with upgrades), I did nothing that would have made the search box disappear.

  9. I did nothing to make any of these changes.

You did do something: you changed theme. You were using Andreas09 and now you're using Able. So:

how can I get my home page back to what it looked like in April.

By switching back to the theme you were using.

  10. I followed your advice and put it "back" to andreas09, which you imply is my original theme. You can see that this did not result in a return to the way my home page looked prior to April 2013. The search box is still missing and there are still problems like the banner placement and now there are unwanted lined boxes around the headings in red.

Please help me return to my original home page format. See:

  11. The search box is just a widget: you go to Appearance > Widgets, open the Right Sidebar module and drag the Search widget to it.
The rest of the differences are due to your previous customization: you had bought the Custom Design upgrade and you had made CSS changes. For example, Andreas09 doesn't support a header image, and you had inserted this image via CSS editing:
    http://medconsumers.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/hdr_cmc_v2.jpg
Do you have the upgrade now?

Do you have the upgrade now?

  12. Oops - sorry for the duplicate phrase!

  13. What do you mean by "Do you have the upgrade now?' I tried to follow your search box instructions to drag the search box to the Right Sidebar. I couldn't drag it successfully after several attempts. Then the search box widget disappeared entirely.

  14. you had bought the Custom Design upgrade and you had made CSS changes.

Do you have that upgrade now or has it expired?

  15. Sorry, but it's unlikely that I knowingly made any design changes (other than yesterday's return to andreas09). I paid someone in 2009 to set up my website and studiously avoided making any changes after October 2012 when I paid her again to remove some things from the home page (e.g. RSS) once it became an archive. To my knowledge, all I did was renew my subscription last May. This a.m., I looked at my website again and saw that I (or was it you?) successfully return the search box to the right sidebar (thank you!!). Now I just need your help in getting rid of those lines around the red headings. Is this possible? (I can live with the banner off kilter, etc.)

  16. a) I'm not WP staff, I'm an experienced fellow blogger volunteering: I don't have access to your dashboard. So if the searchbox is back, the one who did it is you, not me!
    b) That someone you had hired had bought and used the Custom Design upgrade to make global changes (including removing the borders around the images). Without the upgrade, the only thing you can do is modify the code of each image manually. Edit the page, switch the editor to Text (=code), and turn each one of these:
    <img ETC ETC
    to this:
    <img style="border:none;" ETC ETC

  17. Thanks re the search box. Re your point b), Let me clarify: The person I hired at the end of 2012 to remove certain items from the left and right sidebars had nothing to do with the center column. Nor did she buy anything on my behalf. As you can see from the Wayback Machine shots (scroll up the web address at beginning of this discussion), the changes in my home page did not appear until after April 7. (She had no role in my website in 2013.) Can you "walk" me through your suggestion for getting the lines around the two large headings on my home page. As you instructed, I did "switch the editor to text" and then "code." A box popped up at the upper left. Is that where I type in "border : none" or should that instruction pop up some where else without the need for me to type the instruction?

  18. 1. Sorry, you're wrong. Perhaps she didn't explain exactly how your money was spent, or you don't remember. I'm not imagining things or making conjectures: before pointing out what I did, I inspected the code of the Wayback version of your page. Here's an example:
    http://wpbtips.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/mc_widget_headings1.png
Notice the blue truncated "?custo…": it stands for custom CSS. This indication shows only when you have the Custom Design upgrade and have made CSS changes. On this screenshot you can see the original CSS for the sidebar headings, and the custom CSS that had been added to turn them to uppercase, change their color etc.
Here's the CSS that had been added to remove the image borders:
    http://wpbtips.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/mc_no_border1.png
Etc etc. If you still don't believe me, you can wait for a staff reply: staff can see the history of your blog.

    2. I can't walk you through any better than I already did. I didn't say "then code" and I didn't say anything about popups: you edit the page, switch the editor to Text, locate the two instances of the img tag in the content of the page, modify them manually as I showed above, click Update.

  19. I guess I will have to wait for a staff member who might be able to explain more clearly how to remove the lines around the two large red headings on my home page. If you re-read the end of my last reply, you will see that I lost you at the word "code" and did not write "then code" (I wrote: then "code"). I never said that you mentioned a popup, I was telling you what happened when I tried to follow your instructions. (a box popped up that I was expected to fill). Your point #2 indicates to me that you didn't read what I wrote carefully.

  20. Thanks, anyway.

  21. Can a staff member respond to juspi's Oct 10 comment? I thought I would hear from someone by now.

  22. To Justpi

Thank you for your October 10 advice re removing the lines around two headlines on my home page. Though I didn't understand your instructions, someone I know did. He said your instructions could not have been clearer. Thank you, medconsumers
