How to insert a line break/hard return in blog post titles?

  1. Hi there -

Total newb here with what seems like a silly question: how do you insert a line break in the title of blog post? I get that if you were having difficulty within the text of a post you could insert html (
) if necessary - but how can you change where the line breaks on the actual title of an individual post?

    Here's an example:
    http://zarajewelry.wordpress.com/2012/04/13/cant-get-enough-downton-abbey-check-out-this-hilarious-parody-from-huffington-post/

I'd like the title to read:
    Can't get enough Downton Abbey?
    Check out this hilarious parody!

I'd just like some control over the arbitrary way that the line breaks on titles, if possible. And if it's relevant, I do have the CSS upgrade.

Sorry if this is a stupid question!

    Sarah

The blog I need help with is zarajewelry.wordpress.com.

  2. We cannot edit templates or themes and we cannot use CSS editing to chnage the way any theme functions. The Title and URL of a post are related by default. When you initially type the title of your post, the post slug (used in the permalink/URL) is automatically created. The post slug is the part of the URL after the date in a post’s URL. When the default post slug is created, all letters will be converted to lowercase, spaces will be exchanged with dashes, and any special characters will be removed.

You can modify the post slug by clicking the Edit button next to it. When you’re finished editing, click OK. After you are done making your changes don’t forget to click the Update button to update the post and save these changes. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-title-url/

  3. Thank you - but I'm afraid I'm confused. I understand that I can change the post slug (I had altered the title after I created the post) - but are you also saying that how the lines break within the titles (as dictated by each theme) cannot be changed? The breaks are often so arbitrary and not particularly visually appealing - and I was hoping I could alter them so they read better.

    Can't get enough Downton Abbey?
    Check out this hilarious parody!
    INSTEAD OF:
Can't get enough Downton Abbey? Check
    out this hilarious parody!

    Does that make sense?

    Thank you!
    : )

  4. Okay - never mind! I just found another post that suggested to add:       as many times as needed in order to break the lines how you want.

    Whatever works!
    : )

  5. but are you also saying that how the lines break within the titles (as dictated by each theme) cannot be changed?

    Yes. http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/

  6. Sorry - I keep forgetting that html doesn't show up in these posts.

  7. You cannot enter HTML into the title field of a post and inclide line breaks. If you do the results will be a mess. Every blog here wearing the same theme is using the same underlying template. We bloggers cannot access those files and we cannot edit them. Only Staff can access those files and edit them, and every edit they make affects every blog wearing the same theme.

  8. The HTML will display in forum threads if you post it in this format
    backtick
    code
    backtick

The backtick (not to be confused with the singe quote) is found on the key to the immediate left of the number 1 key. It's in lower case ` on the same key as the tilde ~ which is in upper case.

However, in this case it's not relevent as we cannot enter code into the post title field.

  9. Okay. Thanks for the help! Incidentally, before I saw your reply, I tried inserting code on one post and it worked - but not on another.

  10. You're welcome.
