How to renew an expired domain?

  • I need to renew a domain. Why is the late fee $80.00? That seems outlandish.

Under my “upgades” panel, it reads “please contact support to renew this domain. I am them rerouted to this page, which then routes me back to my upgrades page. What is going on?

  • Oh no! This domain theyshalllive.com expired 34 days ago!

WordPress.com is not the Registrar. Wild West Domains is and like any other Registrar they can choose to charge a redemption fee for any expired domain because they own it as soon as you fail to renew and allow to expire. In fact they do not have to offer it for sale to you. They can auction it off. There is a whole industry built around snatching up expired domains and squatting on them and charging even more than the redemption fee you refer to, to those who want to purchase the expired domain back.

  • Your domain theyshalllive.com expired on February 28. Before it expired, we sent email warnings and displayed notifications on your dashboard.

Domain expiration is a lengthy and complicated process that takes about 80 days. During this time, your domain may be put up for auction or sold on back-order. You can learn more about expired domains here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/

The good news is that we may still be able to recover your domain if it has not yet been deleted or purchased by someone else. A late renewal fee of $80 will be added to the regular price of renewal. This fee is charged by the domain registry and is not one which we can waive.

I have sent an email with further info to the address on your account.
