How to upload photos to a post? Get error message

  1. How can one upload photos into a post on a WordPress blog? I tried using the "Upload" field in the "Write Post" page, but whenever I try, it fails, and gives me this error message:

"Unable to create directory /home/[username]/public_html/wp-content/uploads/2006/05. Is its parent directory writable by the server?
    Back to Image Uploading"

I know I must be missing an obivous step or something. I see photos in other people's WordPress blog postings, so I know it must be possible.

Oh, and by the way -- yes, all the directories are writable, at least by me.

    How is it done? Thanks.

These forums here are for those blogs hosted here at WordPress.com. Since you're hosted elsewhere, you need to be over here as we're running different code bases.

I will mention that you're not the one doing the writing to the subdirectory, it's the webserver. Check for something labeled "Change file permissions" or something like that and make sure that /home/[username]/public_html/wp-content/uploads/ is set to 777. If you're totally lost, I would ask your webhost for assiastance.

    Good luck,

Thanks. I was able to alter the permissions and evenutally could upload the picture, and after a bit of tinkering I figured out a way to make a picture appear on the blog. However, that led to a different but related question which I think will be applicable for everyone here (both hosted by WordPress and not), so I'll make a new thread out of it.

The question on the new thread is: How to make the text "flow around" or be adjacent to a picture within a WordPress posting? No need to answer that here.
