.htaccess problem

    hi
    i had a site with some traffic, i deleted it and installed wordpress blog
    i changed .htaccess and inserted errorpage 404 /index.php and i supprized to see that it's not working , i have searched google for this, and cant understand why is that and how can i fix it, i have no root/shell access to my server, what can i do please help
