I can't understand how to add items to the main navigation menu, as when I go to custom menu widget, it wants to add a new menu to the sidebar (which I don't want to do).. Please provide me with the correct answers to this...

That's just the widget. The menu itself can be built from Appearance -> Menus in your blog's Dashboard.
