I have read the forums and unchecked the boxes, but for some reason, it still allows comments at the bottom of the page. I'd really like to use wordpress to create more of a website than a blog. Help !

When it comes to individual posts and pages, you'll need to disable comments following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/

You disabled comments in the Discussion settings, which only disables them on future posts and pages.
To remove them on exists posts and pages, you need to disable them on the specific posts and page following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/#enabling-and-disabling-comments-using-the-discussion-module
I now have the comments off of my posts, but not my pages. There must be something I'm missing... ? Thanks!
Yes, you'll need to edit each page individually and disable comments on each individual page following the guide that I linked to above.
