grandpadavidI have 28 views on the site today in the stats. There is only me logged in and the site is still private while I build it up. How come it is recording my own visits to pages?

Your blog is currently set to private. When it's private, all logged in visitors are tracked (think of private blogs for internal company-wide usage, which would have no stats otherwise). When you set your blog to public, your views won't be tracked.
