But your online instructions don't seem to be matching up.
I read the page describing the process: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#domain-manager-login
But I don't see that process at all from my back end...Only the option to "Edit DNS". It looks like I need to get an authorization code to give to my new hosting service that I'm transferring the domain to. Can you help me do that?

The domain transfer tools isn't appearing because your domain name is only mapped to WordPress.com. The registration for the domain is elsewhere. Do you remember who you registered the domain name with?
If you log in there you'll be able to transfer it to another registrar if you like.
