I chose "I would like my site to be private, visible only to users I choose". But there were 9 viewers referred from WordPress Dashboard (me, I presume) and WordPress.com, with 49 views (!) on my busiest day (yesterday, when I created the blog). I'm confused. I have invited no viewers yet. Is my blog truly private or not??

Yes, your blog really is private and the views are your own (unless you have added anyone else to your blog, or invited viewers), you have probably gone onto your blog from different areas, i.e. from your Dashboard, and from on your stats page for instance. Your own views are counted on a private blog.
