   I spent a lot of time getting my blog the way it was when I had the Twenty Ten theme. I had forgotten that switching themes cancelled out everything and forced one to re-create all the widgets and header image and stuff. Or does it? Is there a way to apply the theme and keep everything in place, especially as the two are so similar? If not, is there any way that I can revert back so I can at least recuperate some of the HTML I had spent so much time putting together? This is a nightmare! Help!

   You don't have to recreate all the widgets. All of them should have been moved into the "inactive widgets" section at the bottom of the widgets page. All you need to do is to drag them back up into the sidebars and arrange them as you desire.

   You can collapse the "available widgets" section at the top by clicking on the right end of its title bar.

   As far as the header, the sizes of them vary from theme to theme, so that you will have to recreate in the correct size for the new theme you are using.

   Ok, sorry, never mind, I just realized that the old widgets are all there and I just need to drag them back in place. Phew. That makes sense! Thank God / the universe / the programmers!

   Thanks for getting to my query so quickly <b>thesacredpath</b>, I guess we were posting at the same time. You don't know how relieved I am. My heart had literally dropped down to my stomach! :-)

   There is no way to apply an new theme and keep everything in place. All of your widgets have migrated into the "Inactive widgets" box so the content is not "lost". You can replace them in the sidebars and or footer widget areas of the new theme. The header size varies form theme to theme so you will create a new one of the correct size and upload it.    You are welcome, and look over the link that timethief gave on Duster such as the fact that the sidebar will not appear on the single post pages such as here: http://fromsmilerwithlove.com/2011/06/24/sign-of-the-times/ . For some that is a big deal and there is no way to add the sidebar there. The theme designers, for whatever reason decided not to include a sidebar on the single post pages.
