   That's actually part of the theme. If you have a Custom Design upgrade, you can hide it with CSS.

   Cool I can live with that, the only other thing is that I'm unable to remove the comments section below the post/image, I just want to create a static splash. Have unticked all the boxes in the appearance/discussion section but it doesn't change the page

   To do that, you'll need to disable comments on the specific post: http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/

   The option at Settings -> Discussion on changes the default for future posts.
