Do I need to get my people to sign up with wordpress so they can get a username or is their another way to do it. I can't even get them to sign up for Skype - help!

You can make your blog private via Settings -> Privacy in your blog's Dashboard, but the users that you allow to view your blog will need to have a free WordPress.com account.
