    If I opt for purchasing a domain name will those that subscribe currently to the blog or have it bookmark be sent directly to the new domain name?

    No but when anyone clicks any link at all anywhere on the interent to your content under the original .wordpress.com URL they will be seamlessly tredirected to the same content under the new domain URL and that's why we purchase domain mapping.
