I am thinking of buying a domain to have a .com address rather than a .wordpress.com one.
However, I am wondering if, in the far future, I decide to leave WordPress, will I still own this domain?
The blog I need help with is mideastreporter.wordpress.com.
Yes the domain is yours to do with what you want as long as you renew the registration each year.
You can point the domain name at any hosting company you want from within the domain management on your account here.

If and when you do move your content into a WordPress.org install you still manage your domain here. As thesacredpath has stated you simply repoint ie. update the nameservers.
