I'M NEW AT THIS.

  1. Hello everyone. I am new to this and need some help. I am using the ... black-letterhead ... theme. I have made basic pages for the pages i am starting with, it turns out to be 19 short pages. I need to set one as my home page first, I know which one. then i need to link ( have sidebar buttons) on the home page to 4 or 5 of the pages, then on each of those 4-5 pages have sidebar buttons to other pages (as many as 12 sidebar buttons on one page, and as few as 6 or 8). Of course a sidebar button on every page back to my home page. Can anyone please give me detailed instructions on how to add the sidebar buttons and link them together. Again, I am very new to this and get confused easily on this stuff. I am pretty computer literate, but this is confusing to me for some reason. Right now when i go to my website (sic) it says it can't be found, but my website name is there only. Can someone please help me. Thank you all in advance for any help you can give. Please remember to try to be detailed as possible, or if there is a linkl with instructions for this theme, that would be nice. I can follow directions pretty good. Thanks again...bootleggas

The blog I need help with is bootleggas.wordpress.com.

  2. In order to answer you we need to break this down in steps. What is the optimal outcome that you want a visitor to experience when clicking into your blog?

Do you want them to arrive on a front page that displays your posts containing fresh content with the most recent entry on top? If so then this is how conventional blogs are set up by default.

Or do you want them to arrive on a static page (Welcome page, landing page) with content that rarely changes? If this is what you want then you have to set that up here > Settings > Reading
    Instructions here. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

Please also read this. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

I'm off to eat so I'll leave the rest for other Volunteers to answer

  3. That is a nightmare navigational setup you have in mind, but if you want to make it happen it is possible (although the buttons can't go in the sidebar, but will have to go in the page itself, as the sidebar is the same on every page).

The reason everyone going to your blog is getting an error is that you deleted the placeholder post and haven't posted new content. You'll be FAR better off if you just start blogging and see how it works. Then you can make changes if you want later.

  4. What I am trying to set up is kind of a store type website, very small, mostly for friends and family tyo let them know what items i have for sale. Most of the pages will not really change except to add new items when I get them in. What I want is to have a welcome page, (about us), and then from there have catagories like computer accessories, electronic accessories, cell phone accessories, etc. Then from those pages have a page for detailed discriptions of each item, or catagory of items, such as from the computer page have a link to a page for all the wi-fi adapters, another page for all the different flash drives, etc. I see on the right side of the page there is a list of catagories. On the front(home) page i would like links to each catagory, pc accessories, electronics, cell phone, then link to each different kind of item. As I have said, to start I have about 19 pages, of course the home page, one page each for the three catagories stated above, and then about 14 different types of items. Does this sound feasable. Thank you all again for responding and I will be reading the articles you suggested.

  5. Read the links we gave you.

You will not be able to sell anything on WordPress.com unless you made it yourself. Artists, authors and crafters can sell things here. Unless you made the items you're talking about from scratch, your blog will be suspended for violations of the Terms of Service.

You will need to find some web host other than WordPress.com for this site you have in mind.

  6. Hi there,

As mentioned above, I'm afraid e-commerce isn't possible here at WordPress.com.

If you require e-commerce/shopping cart functionality, you might be interested in a self-hosted (WordPress.org) installation. There are no restrictions on e-commerce if you setup a self-hosted WordPress.org blog instead of a WordPress.com blog, but there are some added responsibilities.

Please see this link to learn about the differences:

We have hosting recommendations at the following link if you are interested:

  7. Ok , I think I see how this works. I have the home page set and it comes up when I go to the webpage on the internet. Then I published my next page and it shows on the sidebar under pages. So I see how that much works. Now, for the next step, each item catagory(?) ie. wi-fi adapters etc. I don't really want people to see those pages on the sidebar, I would orefer that they have to go to each catagory and then to the items. I hope that makes sense. Do i need to publish those pages or do I make links to them somewhere on secondary pages

  8. Did you bother to read what @macmanx said and the two Posts above his?

  9. Ok, I may have to change hosts, I can understand that. But I am not trying to use a shopping cart type site, more just a list of items and prices, but for a sale they must contact me directly, either email or telephone. Would that be against the rules. I think teh shopping cart thing , at present is way beyond my capabilities. As I said I am very new to this. Thank you for the warning and any more advice and help you can offer. Thanks again for all who responded and helped me. I have gotten started on it and will delete the whole site if it's against the rules, what I am trying to do. Thanks again

  10. Yes, that would be against the rules. You will have to find alternate hosting, and then we will not be able to help you. This forum is only for WordPress.COM blogs. There are other support sites for other kinds of sites, like WordPress.ORG.

  11. Ok thank you for all the help.

  12. You can set the blog to Private if you want to keep the name - once a blog name is deleted here it can never be reused - even by you - you could use the blog for something else if you wanted - but you can't use it to drive traffic to your new site - bootleggas.com has been registered by someone in GA.
