I'm semi-new to blogging, looking for opinions, advice, etc.

  1. I guess I've always wanted to be a writer. I'm trying so hard to focus, and I finally got something down on paper. As with many other people, the worst critic is always themselves. I was wondering if anybody would perhaps like to join the discussion on my new blog attempt, which hopefully won't digitally rot amongst my other attempts.

I only did some mild messing around with widget stuff and I'm still learning. I guess it isn't just about learning how to write again so much as it is about learning how to design things and create content from start to finish.

My intent with this blog is essentially to be an analysis/review of all things fiction (books, movies, comics, everything) that I either like, or feel have some relevance. The idea just sort of popped into to me after a friend mentioned fiction as being frivolous and essentially empty. I'm not exactly trying to shamelessly promote my blog here (well, a little), but rather I would like some advice on writing style and topic/subject matter.

If anybody has similar material they would like to send my way that would be cool. Leave your comments, hate mail, or smiley faces at the bottom. Let me know what you think!

The blog I need help with is fictionalrealism.wordpress.com.

Because most of the wp.com forums are about providing technical assistance with the software, I'll move this thread to the "Off-Topic" forum. You could also post a topic like this in the "Showcase" forum.

If you have questions about widgets or about how to use wp.com, please feel free to post in the Support or Questions forums.

  3. Sorry, figured this would have been the correct forum for such things.

  4. rrittmann, I'm by no means a professional blogger. I just post about my day and interesting things that may occur. Most of the time my day is not filled with fascinating things that people would find very enjoyable reading. But the idea is to connect with others with similar likes and dislikes. While my posts may not be exciting for some, they are eerily similar to many others living their daily lives.

If I were you, I would post your passion and in your spare time find/comment on other blogs with similar interests. Your thoughtful comments will inspire people to visit your blog and build readership.

  5. Greetings rrittmann!

I took a quick spin through and around your new blog.
It looks like you have the beginnings of a good foundation for your writing.
From what I can see at this point in time.....all that is need is to start posting some of your writing. Looking forward to some good reading!

    Best Regards!

This is the blog linked to your username and it's devoid of content ie. it's empty. http://progblogexperiment.wordpress.com/

So which blog do you wish us to comment on?

Are you sure you are posting to the correct forum? These forums are only for those with free blogs from and being free hosted by wordpress.COM. So if you have a wordpress.ORG install you ought to be posting to this forum isntead. > http://wordpress.ORG/support/ And, if you aren't sure which one you have you can read this entry to find out. > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

  7. Hm, that was an old abandoned idea I had. The new one, which I entered in the field when I posted (thought it would post a link or something there) was http://fictionalrealism.wordpress.com/

Ignore any other blog I started, because they're kind of garbage. :)

  8. May I suggest that you replace the link to the deleted blog with the link to your living blog? Dashboard -> Users -> Personal Settings -> then scroll down to Account Details. Then scroll down to where it says ‘Website‘ select the URL for your primary wordpress.com blog and then save changes.

Now every time you sign into the forum we can all click on your username and your blog will be linked to it. And every time you leave a comment on a blog your username can be likewise clicked and your blog can be instantly located.

  9. Good idea! Thanks, timethief! See, I'm learning day by day!

  10. Hi there, rrittmann.

Firstly, I'd like to say I think the theme you chose for your blog is fitting for fictional reviews. For some reason, it gives me a sci-fi feel, which I think is very appropriate.

I'm pretty new to WordPress and blogging myself, but here's my attempt at giving you some criticism on your most recent blog entry.

For your blog entitled "Remember Sammy Jenkis" is overall well written, in my opinion. I felt like there was definitely a passionate voice behind the post, and it was interesting to see your take on the movie. What I disliked, however, was your introduction to the post. I felt a little confused reading the beginning of it. I didn't really understand, "I pondered over what I wanted to cover first. I mean, there’s this gigantic universe of things to choose from that I could pick apart." Personally, I would have liked for you to mention your goal for what you were going to cover. I found myself thinking "Cover for what? Is this referring to what topic was to be covered first for the blog? Or what type of media was to be covered in the blog, generally?"

But this was just my take on it. In the end, it's up to you how you use your blog. Best of luck! :)

  11. You know, to be honest with you - I'm not sure what I want to do. I thought I wanted to analyze things, then I ended up reviewing them. I'm not sure where to draw the line. Should I expect my readers to know the source material or should I be introducing them to it?

I mean, it's easier to talk about Memento when you've seen it. It's much more difficult in a few paragraphs to take a deep breath and say, "Okay, so this is the story and it's confusing."

I feel like I should have maybe just jumped right in and said, "You know all that stuff - this is what I think, this is what I liked."

Again, it's one of those things I guess I have to figure out what I want to do. I don't think I was too satisfied with my first entry to be honest. I guess that's what practice and criticism is all about!

    Thanks for your input!
